In Marie’s The Two Lovers [Les Deus Amanz], a king would not allow anyone to marry his beautiful daughter unless that suitor could carry her in his arms up to the top of a mountain without stopping to rest. When the damsel fell in love, she reassured her beloved that a special potion would help. She said, “I have a relative in Salerno … who has practiced the art of physic [medicine] so much that she is well-versed in medicines.”17 After fetching the potion, her beloved carried his true love, insisting he needed no medical aid. Reaching the mountaintop, he collapsed and died, whereupon the girl kissed his dead corpse and expired as well. One lesson was: always obey your woman doctor − like Trota from Salerno.
